Weight Loss Clinic

Our service is designed to support patients with achieving their weight loss goals.

In the UK, approximately 1 in 4 adults live with obesity—a serious health issue that increases the risk of conditions like cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes, potentially reducing life expectancy by 3 to 10 years, depending on severity.

Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight can sometimes be a complex and difficult journey, that also requires commitment. Fortunately, we are here to help with our weight loss service, offering you personalised support, including dietary and physical activity guidance and prescription weight loss aids where appropriate*.

*The choice of available treatments will be dependent on clinical assessment by one of our healthcare professionals.

You can then book a full consultation with our pharmacists, who will provide confidential and detailed guidance on how to use the medication effectively and safely.

Weight loss injection service: How much does it cost?

The service costs per month is dependent on the strength of your dose, it includes the cost of your consultations plus your Mounjaro pens, needles and sharps bins for that month.

Why have prices recently changed?

The price of Mounjaro in the UK has recently changed, this is an industry-wide decision, driven by a significant increase in the price charged by manufacturer, Eli Lilly, to UK providers of Mounjaro. It is not unique to Palmers Pharmacy.

Although Eli Lilly increased prices by up to 170%, we have kept our rise to a minimum to make Mounjaro as affordable as possible for our patients. Some patients can achieve strong results at lower doses, which may also help reduce costs. Our pharmacist can guide you through whether this is suitable for you.

We can help you explore the options that best suit your health, lifestyle, and budget, whether that’s adjusting your dose, taking a break.

Some patients may also consider switching to another treatment, such as Wegovy, if they are eligible. Our pharmacist will review your request and advise on the safest dose for you.

Which treatment prices will be changing?
Only Mounjaro, prices for all other treatments remain the same.

What can I do if I can no longer afford Mounjaro?
We understand this change may affect how you manage your treatment. You do have options, including:

Switching to a lower dose, lower doses cost less, and can still be effective.

Staying on your current dose, if you’re already on a lower dose, you could continue without increasing it.

Trying a different treatment, such as Wegovy, if you’re eligible. With our new service, you can begin Wegovy 7 days after your last Mounjaro dose.

A consultation with a pharmacist is required to ensure the service is safe and suitable for your individual needs.

How does Mounjaro work?

Mounjaro is a weight loss injection that contains tirzepatide, which improves insulin regulation and can reduce appetite by promoting feelings of fullness after smaller meals. It helps to stabilises blood sugar levels, reduces cravings, and boosts energy. This helps the body efficiently burn fat while maintaining a calorie deficit for weight loss.

Mounjaro is most effective when combined with a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise.

What kind of support can I expect?

You’ll begin with an initial consultation with our qualified weight loss pharmacist, who will guide you through the process of starting Mounjaro and explain everything you need to know.

Once you begin the medication, you’ll have monthly follow-up consultations where your pharmacist, familiar with your medical history and goals, will provide ongoing support. They will offer lifestyle tips, ensure your Mounjaro dosage is optimal, and assist you in every way possible to help you achieve your weight loss goals.

Our Support Process includes the following steps:

Are there any side effects of Mounjaro?

Like all medications, Mounjaro may cause some side effects. Common ones include nausea, diarrhoea, decreased appetite, vomiting, constipation, indigestion, and stomach pain. These side effects can lead to dehydration, so it’s especially important for individuals with kidney issues to stay well-hydrated to avoid worsening kidney function.

How do you use Mounjaro?

You inject Mounjaro under the skin (subcutaneously) in your stomach area, thigh or upper arm once a week using an injection pen.

Don’t worry, it’s actually much easier than it sounds and if we prescribe Mounjaro for you, we’ll provide you with full instructions on how to use it.

You must follow a strict dosage increase schedule as advised by your healthcare provider.

Mounjaro dosage

To allow your body to get used to the medicine and have the best chance for long-term success, you should follow the gently increasing dosage schedule as instructed.

Usually, you’ll start with a dose of 2.5 mg of Mounjaro, which will increase every four weeks (or as advised and if suitable for you) until you reach your maximum maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg.

Is Mounjaro effective?

If you’re wondering how much weight you can lose on Mounjaro, clinical trials have shown that patients could achieve at least 20% weight loss after using tirzepatide for 72 weeks (18 months) when combined with healthy lifestyle changes.

What are the main side effects of Mounjaro?

Mounjaro can cause some side effects to occur. Very common ones are gastrointestinal in nature: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation. These are mainly seen with dose increases and tend to settle with time.

Other common side effects could include: fatigue, feeling lightheaded, excess wind (flatulence), gallstones, gastroesophageal reflux, injection site reactions, hair loss and hypoglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes.

In rare cases, there can be serious side effects, such as:

Pancreatitis – if you develop severe abdominal pain, with or without persistent vomiting, this may be a sign of pancreatitis and you need to get medical help immediately.

Anaphylaxis – if you experience difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips or tongue and difficulty swallowing, you may be having a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) and you must seek immediate medical help.

Please read the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your medicine for full details of side effects and how to use Mounjaro.

How to manage the side effects of Mounjaro?

Common Mounjaro side effects should be mild and are likely to lessen or even disappear after your body gets used to the treatment. We understand that it’s still tough to live with these discomforts though and so we’ve put together some tips for managing these where possible:

Make sure to inject yourself with the treatment at the same time and day each week so your body has a regular interval between each dose.

Stay hydrated, sipping water and other clear liquids if you’re experiencing nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea. It may also help to eat smaller meals more regularly and avoid anything that smells or tastes too strong.

If you’re struggling with constipation, increase your fibre intake, stay well hydrated and try eating small fruits such as prunes, figs or grapes. Make sure you’re also getting regular activity, such as going on short walks.

To ease a headache, spend time in a quiet space to relax, take a simple pain relief medicine like paracetamol, drink plenty of water, and try relaxation techniques such as meditation and DIY scalp massage.

What else should I know about Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is approved for people with a BMI over 30 (obesity), as well as those with a BMI over 27 (overweight) who also have weight-related health problems such as prediabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart problems.

You shouldn’t use tirzepatide if you’re pregnant, and you should stop taking Mounjaro at least one month before trying to get pregnant.

Mounjaro is not suitable in some medical circumstances, for example if you use some other diabetes medicines, have severe problems with digesting food, or have a history of pancreatitis or thyroid cancer. If you’re allergic to tirzepatide or any of the other ingredients in this weight loss injection treatment, you must not use Mounjaro.

It’s essential that you give us a full medical history and details of any conditions or other medicines you’re taking when you fill out our online questionnaire. This ensures we’re able to prescribe weight loss treatment that’s suitable and safe for you.

As Mounjaro is a new weight loss medicine available in the UK, it has been assigned a black triangle, which means it will be closely monitored for any adverse effects.

Where should I inject Mounjaro?

The best places to inject Mounjaro are ones with the most fat. These are: your tummy (although make sure to inject more than 5cm away from your belly button); the front of your thighs; or your upper arms. It’s important that you change injection sites regularly. You can inject in the same area (e.g. tummy) but choose a different spot in that area each time.

How long does it take for Mounjaro to work?

Mounjaro should start working straight away, but it could take several weeks until it has a noticeable effect on regulating your blood sugar level and impacting your appetite and eating habits.

Does Mounjaro come with swabs?

The ‘instructions for use’ that come with the pen advise that you use swabs - you can purchase these from our pharmacy when you collect your pen.

How do I re-order my next dose?

Our clinical team will check in regularly with you via email to see how you are progressing with treatment. Towards the end of your first month, you will receive reminder emails with instructions on how to re-order your next dose.

You will be directed to a shorter clinical consultation designed to assess how you are getting on with your treatment and whether or not you need a dosage adjustment.

For optimal results, we encourage patients to take a long-term view of this treatment on a monthly basis until you reach your weight loss goal.

What are the non-drug alternatives to Mounjaro?

Making healthy lifestyle changes, such as improving your diet and increasing activity, can help with weight loss and also help you to live a healthier, happier life.

What are alternative weight loss treatments?

We can also prescribe other medicines to help support your weight loss and weight management journey. Wegovy and Saxenda are weight loss injection treatments that work similarly to Mounjaro. Orlistat and Xenical are capsule medicines that work by helping your body get rid of the extra fat in your diet.
